Child toothbrushing tips for parents

Feb 25, 2022, 08:00 AM

Most parents can agree that getting your child to brush their teeth can be difficult. Proper tooth brushing techniques come from parents that know what those techniques are. We want to make teeth brushing easier for you and your child(ren) by providing some tooth brushing tips that every parent should know.

When is it safe to start tooth brushing?

A great time to introduce healthy gum and mouth habits at home is right after a baby is born. Parents and caregivers can use a soft cloth to clean baby's gums and mouth. After a baby's first tooth comes through the gums, the habit of daily brushing can begin.

How much toothpaste should I use to brush my kids' teeth?

Use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush with a rice size amount of fluoride toothpaste twice a day until age three (3).

After age three (3), slightly increase the amount of toothpaste to a pea size amount for cavity protection.

Although some children quickly learn to brush their teeth, they will still need support to make sure spots are not missed. Most children benefit from support until the age of eight (8).

How else can I help my kids brush and floss?

Some ways to help your child with brushing and flossing their teeth thoroughly are:

Brush your teeth with your child

Take turns brushing each other's teeth

Use a timer or hourglass, to ensure brushing for at least 2 minutes

Find a video of your child's favorite character brushing and flossing, like Elmo

Brush to your child's favorite song and dance while you do it

It is recommended that parents, caregivers, and older siblings of the family brush their teeth at least twice a day, floss at least once day and have regular dental visits too!
