Myths and facts about the COVID vaccine for children

If you have kids ages 5 and up, getting them vaccinated against COVID-19 is the most important thing you can do to keep them protected. With so much information out there, we do want to caution you against the many COVID vaccine myths that are floating around. If you are looking up vaccine information on the Internet, stick to credible sources that are updated regularly – CDCOregon Health Authority and other public health websites are a good place to start.


Here are some COVID vaccine facts for children:

  • -The COVID vaccine for children ages 5-11 is safe, effective and FDA-approved

  • -There is no evidence of the COVID vaccines causing fertility problems in women or men

  • -The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is over 90% effective at preventing COVID in children ages 5-11

  • -The best way to protect children 5 years and older from COVID is by getting them vaccinated

  • -The benefits of COVID vaccination for children ages 5 through 11 years outweigh any known risks

  • -COVID vaccine side effects for children are similar to those they may experience after getting routine vaccinations and should go away in a few days

Other COVID vaccine facts that are not specific to children include:

  • -Nearly all the ingredients in COVID vaccines are also ingredients in many foods – fats, sugars, and salts 

  • -Getting the vaccine is a safer and more dependable way to build immunity than getting sick with COVID 

  • -COVID vaccines do not create or cause variants of the virus that causes COVID. Instead, COVID vaccines can help prevent new variants from emerging 

  • -mRNA vaccines, such as Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, are new, but research and development on them has been underway for decades 

  • -COVID vaccines do not contain microchips 

  • -Receiving a COVID vaccine will not make you magnetic, including at the site of vaccination which is usually your arm 

  • -None of the vaccines authorized for use in the U.S. contain a live virus 

  • -COVID vaccines do not change or interact with your DNA in any way 

  • -The vaccine cannot make you sick with COVID because it does not contain a live virus
